BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it is not possible for the party to accept the proposal of discussion, even informally, offered by the Election Commission (EC) until the issue of caretaker government during the national election is settled.

The party’s general secretary said the issue of the caretaker government should bring first on the table of discussion and then the matter of dialogue.

BNP Secretary General said this in a press conference at the party chief’s office in Gulshan in the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier, the party’s standing committee meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon.

Mirza Fakhrul called today’s press conference to announce the decision taken in the meeting of BNP’s standing committee.

BNP thanked the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for sending the letter, inviting the party for discussion.

The Election Commission sent a letter to BNP Secretary General on March 23.

In a press conference on Tuesday, CEC Kazi Habibul Awal said that they had sent a letter to BNP not for dialogue, but for informal discussion.

Explaining the decision of BNP regarding the letter, he said, the meeting feels that any discussion or dialogue with the EC will not be fruitful and it will be meaningless until the current main political crisis is resolved.

The 2014 and 2018 national elections have proven that the EC is not independent and even if it wants to, it does not have the power to organize elections in a free, fair and impartial manner.

“In the standing committee meeting BNP decided that they are not able to accept the proposal for discussion and exchange of views made by EC as they think that there is no possibility to solve the main political problem,” said BNP Secretary Genera.
