The HC bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan granted the bail after hearing a bail petition filed by Fakhrul and Abbas on Tuesday.

The petition’s attorneys said that despite Fakhrul and Abbas’ names not appearing in the case’s first information report (FIR), the lower courts involved had refused to give them bail.

However, they claimed, bail has already been granted to other FIR-named defendants.

Senior attorney Zainul Abedin represented the accused BNP leaders during the court while Additional Attorney General SM Munir argued against the bail request.

Earlier, the lower court involved in the same case denied Fakhrul and Abbas bail four times.

On December 8, a day after the altercation started in front of the BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters, a case was lodged with Paltan Model Police Station. Several people were hurt in the clash, and one person died.

On December 9, the day before their Dhaka divisional mass rally, Fakhrul and Abbas were picked up from their respective houses and taken to jail after Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim denied their bail requests.

The two were shown arrested on suspicion of inciting party activists to attack police.
