A Rohingya leader (Majhi) was shot dead by miscreants in Ukhia Balukhali Camp-8 East of Cox’s Bazar around 10:30 am on Monday.

8 Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Faruq Ahmed said Rohingya leader Shafi Ullah alias Shafiq, 38, who was killed in the shooting, is the son of the deceased Mohammad Siddique of B-Block, Balukhali No. 8 Rohingya Camp of Ukhia Upazila.

He was the main leader of B-Block of that camp, he added.

The ASP said Shafiq was on his way back after the annual function of a madrasa in his camp in the morning when a group of miscreants named Arsa fired randomly at him, leaving him dead on the spot.

On getting information, a team of APBn reached the spot but by the time, the miscreants fled the scene.

After the incident, APBn operation is going on to arrest the miscreants, he continued.

Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Ukhiya’s Balukhali Katupalong Camp-8 East, said, “Shafi Ullah was always vocal about the opposition to ‘Arsa’ in the camp. He might be shot dead for that reason. Terrorist groups in the camp are trying to become active again.”
