AL main session begins to elect new leaders

ONLINE DESK : The second session of the 22nd National Council of Awami League began on Saturday afternoon to elect party’s new leaders.

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the session around 3 pm at Engineers Institution Auditorium in Ramna in the capital.

Some 7,000 councilors from all over the country participated in the second session of Awami League to choose party president and general secretary. They will also form a central committee of 81 members.

Earlier in the day, the first session of the conference ended at 1:30 pm Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.

In the second session, according to the previous rules, the names of party president and general secretary will be proposed through the election commission. Based on that, the councilors will select the leadership for the top two positions.

Later, the entire power of selecting the leadership in the other positions of the party is entrusted to the party chief. Later, the final decision is taken through the discussion between party chief and senior leaders.

To elect the new leadership of Awami League, a three-member election commission has been formed with Yusuf Hossain Humayun as the chairman of the party’s advisory council. The other two members of the commission are Moshiur Rahman, adviser to the prime minister and Sahabuddin Chuppu, a member of the advisory council.

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the national council at around 10:30 am by releasing doves as symbols of peace and flying balloons.

Sheikh Hasina hoisted the national flag while AL general secretary Obaidul Quader hoisted the party flag. At the same time the president of each organizational district hoisted the national flag and the general secretary hoisted the party flag. The national anthem was played at this time.

Later, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and General Secretary Obaidul Quader and other central leaders delivered speeches on the occasion.
