An allegation was brought against Plan International Bangladesh that it excluded the name of the final winner of its ‘Media Award-2021’ in a span of three hours after the announcement.

The name of Jahangir Alam, the staff reporter of the country’s leading online news portal Jago News, was announced as the winner of the award on behalf of Plan International Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon.

One responsible person named Sanker Barua Panna informed the reporter about the award over the phone, saying that the prize would be handed over to him in a programme at Jatiya Press Club on Monday.

After around three hours, the same person phoned Jahangir Alam and said not he but another journalist was nominated for the prize.

About this, Panna told Jago News that there is a jury board consisting of four members for the media award. Jahangir’s name was first announced with the results judged by three juries.

But, later, the results judged by all the four juries showed that another person secured two points more than that of the previously declared winner, he added.

The man again phoned and said, “I am speaking Panna, from Ekattor TV. Actually, we are third party, working on behalf of Plan International Bangladesh. We all work at media that causes this mistake.”

Jago News reporter Jahangir said one named Panna told him over the phone around 1:01 pm, “Congratulations! You have been selected for Plan International Bangladesh’s media award. You come to Jatiya Press Club at 11 am on Monday where you would be given the award.”

Around three hours after the call, he again phoned and said, “Jahangir Bhai, I am sorry, you have not been nominated. We could not select you for just one number.”

Jahangir said it has tarnished his honour and he said will take legal action in this regard.

Contacted Plan International Bangladesh’s Director (Girls Rights) Kashfia Firoz, she told Jago News that they gave charge for the evaluation process of the prize to a third party through tender and they conducted it.

“The man who phoned is not a staff of Plan International. We will look into the matter and inform you after talking to them (the third party,” she added.
