3-day dance festival kicks off at Shilpakala

A three-day dance festival has begun in Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Thursday as part of the academy’s initiative titled ‘Dance Against Corona’ to promote communal harmony amidst this tough time of pandemic.

A total of 75 dance troupes from across the country will perform in the festival. The festival was inaugurated in the National Theatre Hall of BSA on Thursday afternoon.

Some of the participating dance troupes outside Dhaka will also hold their performance at the same time amid local arrangements in their respective areas.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has long been working to create as many as 75 new forms of dance and also provide working opportunity for many newcomer dance artists and choreographers.

Of the 75 participating troupes, some are comprised of 10 dance artists each while some others have 20-30 performers in each troupe. The total number of participants stands at around 1,000 including 75 choreographers.

Of them, 50 troupes have been given Tk 1,00,000 each and 25 other troupes Tk 80,000 each to help them for new dance productions.

Earlier, on Wednesday, a press briefing took place at the academy’s National Art Gallery where BSA Director General Liakat Ali Lucky presented the details of the festival.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid was the chief guest while Bangladesh Dance Artists Association (BDAA) President Minu Haque was the special guest at the press briefing presided over by Liakat Ali Lucky.

BSA Secretary Md Asaduzzaman and its Music, Dance and Recitation Department Director Kazi Aftab Uddin Hablu, among others, were present.

Of the participating dance troupes, 51 groups are from Dhaka and the remains are from Mymensingh, Moulvibazar, Sylhet, Khagrachhari, Barishal, Rajshahi, Narayanganj, Gaibandha, Tangail, Naogaon, Bogura, Rangamati, Khulna, Chattogram and Satkhira.
