Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League allegedly foiled a soiree of devotional music, Qawali, vandalising the stage at the Teacher-Student Centre of Dhaka University on Wednesday evening.

The organisers said that the students were very much interested to attend the event and people gathered at the venue before the schedule.

Mir Huzaifa Al Mamduh, one of the organisers and a student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department, said that it was the very first time an event of Qawali was arranged by the general students of the university.

“We took permission from the authority. But the peaceful arrangement turned violent as 50-60 activists of Chhatra League attacked and vandalised the stage and injured many of the general students,” said Huzaifa.

The leaders of Chhatra League denied the accusation and put the blame on the organisers as debates sparked over the arrangement of such an event.

Chhatra League’s Dhaka University unit General Secretary Saddam Hossain said, “We were not involved in the violence. There was a debate among the organisers whether organising such musical events was allowed in religion. The violence was a sequel to such conflict. There is debate on validity Qawali in Islam.”

The university Proctor Golam Rabbani said that they did not give permission to arrange such an event considering the Covid-19 pandemic.

“But the organisers did not pay any heed. There was even an attack on the event by another group. We have to take action against the two groups to ensure security on the campus,” he said.

The event where Qawali Band ‘Silsila’ was supposed to perform was organised by the university’s general students.

Noted Qawali singers Nadim Qawal and Murshidi-Bhandari were also scheduled to perform.
