The BNP has removed Taimur Alam Khandakar from the party chief’s advisory council for taking part in the Narayanganj city polls.

Taimur Alam is contesting the mayoral elections, slated for January 16, as an independent candidate against incumbent mayor Selina Hayat Ivy.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Monday afternoon.

Rizvi, however, did not mention the reason behind the party’s decision.

On Sunday, Rizvi signed a letter in this regard.

Taimur told journalists on Monday that the party did not communicate with him over the matter.

He said that he personally telephoned BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman after he learnt about the party’s decision through social media and thanked him for the decision.

Taimur said that he welcomed the move as he is now free to work for the people.

On December 26, Taimur Alam was relieved from the post of Narayanganj district unit convener.

The BNP has refrained from nominating candidates for the ongoing elections to union parishads, municipalities and city corporations, and has also been demanding an impartial interim government to hold the next general elections.
