The government extended its strict lockdown with stay-at-home orders for citizens by another week

The fifth day of the hard lockdown has seen an increase in traffic in Dhaka as the country battles to curb rising cases of the coronavirus.

After a break of four-day since the lockdown began on Thursday, banks, financial institutions and stock markets reopened on Monday. However, lenders are operating on a limited scale in line with the central bank’s order.

Besides, more emergency vehicles, alongside cars, motorcycles and rickshaws, are plying the roads as all emergency service offices are open now.

People at different locations in the city were seen walking to their destinations.

Meanwhile, the government extended its strict lockdown with stay-at-home orders for citizens by another week, a day after the daily coronavirus deaths reached a record high.

In a notification issued on Monday, the Cabinet Division said that the ongoing restrictions will remain effective until July 14 midnight.

Earlier on June 30, the Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification imposing a number of rules and regulations as part of the lockdown measure from July 1-7.

On Sunday, the health authorities reported 153 deaths in a single day, the highest since the pandemic disease broke out in Bangladesh last year. With the latest tally, the countrywide death toll now stands at 15,065.

Meanwhile, another 8,661 people tested positive over the 24-hour period, raising the total caseload in the country to 944,917.
