The United Nations on Wednesday said that it was not involved in the preparations of relocation of the Rohingyas to Bhasan Char from Cox’s Bazar refugee camps.

The UN office in Dhaka said this in a statement.

With ‘limited information on the overall relocation exercise,’ the UN had not been involved in ‘identification of refugees’ and their relocation to the island, it said.

The United Nations takes this opportunity to highlight its longstanding position that Rohingya refugees must be able to make a free and informed decision about their relocation to Bhasan Char based on relevant, accurate and updated information.

The Bangladesh government has indicated that relocation of the Rohingyas to the island will be voluntary, and the United Nations calls on the government to respect this important commitment.
