The NBR chairman said taxpayers can get extension on a case-by-case basis

National Board of Revenue will not extend the deadline for income tax filing beyond November 30, said its Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem.

The disclosure, which came at a press conference on Sunday, is a disappointment for taxpayers, who have been requesting for an extension given the looming second wave of coronavirus.

Asked whether this decision would lead to huge gatherings in front of tax offices in the last two days, heightening risks of transmission of the lethal virus, Muneem said the taxpayers had enough time to file in their returns.

The tax offices began accepting returns from July 30.

Still, the commissioners have been told to be lenient towards taxpayers regarding the imposition of a penalty for failure to submit their annual income statements within the deadline.

Taxpayers can apply to the commissioner concerned for an extension, Muneem said.

As of Thursday, 13.2 lakh returns were filed, up 4.8 per cent from a year earlier. Tax payments amounting to Tk 2,308 crore were cleared, down from last year’s Tk 2,580 crore, Muneem said.
