The National Board of Revenue is not going to extend the deadline for income tax return submission beyond November 30, said its chief today.

However, taxpayers will be able to file their tax returns taking time from tax offices, said NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem responding to question from reporters at a press briefing at the NBR headquarters.

The NBR made the disclosure despite demand from taxpayers for extension of the deadline as the second wave looms and number of coronavirus cases is rising for the last several weeks.

The NBR chairman said commissioners have been told to be lenient towards taxpayers regarding imposition of penalty for failure to submit their annual income statements within the deadline.

The NBR said it received higher returns — at 13.30 lakh returns — until November 26 this year, up from 12.57 lakh from the same period a year ago.

Time for return submission without penalty begins from July 1 and ends on November 30.

Muneem, responding to whether the NBR’s decision would create huge crowds of taxpayers in the last two days and create risk of transmission of Covid-19, said taxpayers havehad enough time as the time for submission starts from July 1.

This year all taxpayers except for certain cases, will be required to submit income tax returns.
