Necessary steps are being taken to ensure that everyone gets the vaccine, assures minister

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has said that everyone in Bangladesh will get the Covid-19 vaccine.

He said that the government was taking measures so that the people of Bangladesh got vaccinated for coronavirus in phases.

The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the surgery division and an operation theatre at Dhaka’s Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Institute and Hospital on Thursday, reports Bangla Tribune.

Maleque said: “Necessary steps are being taken to ensure that everyone gets the vaccine. The prime minister has directed us to ensure vaccines for all citizens of Bangladesh.

“We are moving forward with that arrangement. We will start distributing the vaccine as and when it becomes available.”

The health minister claimed that Covid-19 in Bangladesh was still under control and said: “It is not possible for the Health Services Division alone to control the deadly virus.”

“Everyone has to practise and obey the government-issued health safety guidelines, he added.

The government has inked a contract to receive 30 million doses of the vaccine, developed by Oxford University in collaboration with AstraZeneca, from the Serum Institute of India, via Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

At the same time, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) has assured Bangladesh of 680,000 doses for 20% of the population.

The Bangladesh government is hoping to get delivery of these vaccines between January and February 2021.

GAVI and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been preparing for several months to distribute Covid-19 vaccines to people all around the world once the vaccines were proved to be safe and effective.
