College student hacked to death over ‘pond dispute’

A college student was beaten to death allegedly by his neighbours over a pond dispute in Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Monabbir Ahmed Tanan, 26, son of Syed Shibbir Ahmed, a resident of Aliyara village under Haripur union in Nasirnagar upazila. Tanan was a final year student of Political Science (Honours) in Brahmanbaria Government College.

The deceased’s family alleged that they had a dispute with a family of Osman Mia over a pond in the village. Centering this issue, tension rose between the two families few days ago and was resolved it later locally.

According to family sources, on Monday afternoon, Tanan went to the disputed pond and was beaten and injured by the opponents. Later he was taken to Nasirnagar Health Complex in a critical condition where the doctors referred him to Dhaka. But Tanan breathed his last on the way in Narayanganj.

Inspector (Investigation) of Nasirnagar Police Station Kabir Hossain said, “The opponents have beaten Tanin over a pond dispute. He died on way to Dhaka. His body was then taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.”

The deceased’s family has filed a written compliant in connection with this incident and is also preparing for legal action, he said.

Police are investigating the incident, the inspector added.
